Obiettivi formativi
Lo scopo dell’ insegnamento è quello di fornire allo studente le conoscenze di base dei materiali dentari in termini chimici, fisici e biologici, conoscere le procedure di fabbricazione, indicazioni d’uso, i componenti costituenti i singoli materiali dentari, il loro impiego in Odontoiatria ed in Odontotecnica ed orientarsi nella scelta dei materiali in rapporto all’ ottimale impiego clinico e di laboratorio.
At the end of the course the student must to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding, regarding the Dental Materials, such as:
- Physical, chemical and biological aspects;
- Components that constitute the individual materials;
- Indications and procedures of use and clinical use;
- Industrial processes of manufacture of the same;
- Indications in the handling and use of biomaterials.
- Security systems in the use of materials (DPI) and disinfection methods.
Furthermore the students must be able to orientate in the choice of materials of clinical use and laboratory use.

Lo studente al termine del corso dovrà dimostrare conoscenze e capacità di comprensione, in merito ai Materiali Dentari, quali:
- proprietà fisiche, chimiche e biologiche;
- componenti che costituiscono i singoli materiali;
- corrette indicazioni di uso e utilizzo clinico;
- procedure odontotecniche del loro utilizzo
- procedure industriali della fabbricazione degli stessi;
- indicazioni nella manipolazione e uso dei Biomateriali.

Acquisizione dei concetti guida utili ad orientarsi rapidamente nella scelta dei materiali e biomateriali tra il numero enorme di prodotti e tecnologie disponibili in campo Odontoiatrico al fine di scegliere i materiali più performanti nell’utilizzo clinico.

PARTE GENERALE
- Materiali e strutture: le proprietà meccaniche e fisiche: stress, deformazione, curva sollecitazione-deformazione; modulo di Young; resilienza; la tenacità dei materiali biologici e non; concetto di stress e deformazione dei materiali metallici e non; frattura fragile e duttile.
- Proprietà dei materiali: modificazioni dimensionali; conduttività termica;
proprietà elettriche; solubilità ed assorbimento di acqua; adesività e coesività;
fenomeni di fatica dei materiali metallici e delle leghe metalliche. La durezza.

- Detergenti; vernici; sigillanti.
- Cere: caratteristiche e modi d’uso
- Gesso: caratteristiche fisico-chimiche e utilizzo.
- Cementi: ZOE; Fosfato di zinco; OEBA; Policarbossilati; Vetroionomerici; Cementi endodontici; Idrossido di calcio; MTA; Silicati e silicofosfati.
- La guttaperca: caratteristiche fisico-chimiche e utilizzo
- Il mercurio e gli amalgami di Ag: i problemi di biocompatibilità.
- Paste: per lucidatura e profilassi.

The mechanical and physical properties: stress-strain curve; Young's modulus; resilience; the toughness of biological materials and not; concept of stress and deformation of the metallic materials and not; brittle fracture and ductile. The creep and the concept of the propagation of a crack in solids. Crystalline materials, glasses and transitions. The color.
Metals and alloys generality. Polymers generality.
The tooth as a composite material.
Material properties: dimensional changes; thermal conductivity; electrical properties; solubility and water absorption; adhesiveness and cohesiveness; fatigue phenomena in alloys. The hardness. Studies of Griffit, Inglis and wiskers. The color.
Concepts structural and biomechanical dental and periodontal tissues, the visco-elastic model (Maxwell and Voight).
Self-protection concepts in the use of materials.
Disinfection of impression materials.

Detergents; varnishes; sealants.
Wax: features and use
Stone: physico-chemical characteristics and use.
Cements: ZOE; calcium hydroxide; zinc polyacrylate; EBA; zinc phosphate; glass ionomers. Silicates and silicofosfati.
The gutta-percha: physico-chemical characteristics and use
The amalgams of Ag: characteristics and the problems of biocompatibility.
Paste: for polishing and prophylaxis.
Impression Materials: rigid (compound, plaster, eugenato) and elastic (polysulfides, polyethers, silicones addition and condensation, the new materials based on mixtures of vinyl polysiloxane and polyether; hydrocolloids: reversible and irreversible). The reproduction of the models by means of: plaster, epoxy polymers.
The acrylic polymers of prosthetic use; copolymers; features and techniques of use. Dental composites: types, indications, characteristics and limitations, polymerization techniques.
Metal alloys: Gold cohesive; gold alloys; palladium alloys; nickel alloys; chromic-cobalt alloys. Alloys for metal-ceramic restorations. Solders and soldering.

Modalità di insegnamento
L’ insegnamento prevede 50 ore di lezioni frontali.
Le lezioni teoriche frontali tratteranno le proprietà fisiche, chimiche e biologiche dei Materiali Dentari, le procedure di fusione mediante la tecnica a cera persa e la tecnica computer aided designed-computer aided manufacturing (CAD_CAM), i componenti che costituiscono ogni singolo materiale dentario, i dispositivi di protezione e le cautele nella manipolazione, l’ uso su pazienti dei materiali e dei biomateriali, l’utilizzo dei materiali in odontotecnica e le procedure di costruzione di manufatti odontoiatrici.
Teaching method:
The teaching provides 50 hours of lectures. The lectures will deal the physical, chemical and biological properties of Dental Materials, the melting procedures through the lost-wax technique, the Computer Aided Designed and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM technique), the components that make up each individual dental materials, protective equipment and precautions for handling, the use on patients of materials and biomaterials, the clinical use of dental materials.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
l programma d’esame coincide con il programma del corso.
L'apprendimento viene verificato alla fine del corso con un esame scritto caratterizzato da 10 domande aperte, il superamento dell’esame scritto permette di accedere all’esame orale.
Se il voto dello scritto è di 27/30 lo studente può decidere di mantenere il voto o sostenere la prova orale; per votazioni, all’esame scritto, inferiori ai 27/30 deve essere sostenuto l’esame orale.
Learning verification:
The examination program coincides with the course program. Learning is verified at the end of the course with a written test featuring 10 open-ended questions. To access the oral examination, the student must pass the written examination. If, the vote of the written examination is 27/30 or more, the student can decide to keep the vote or take the oral examination; less than 27/30 the student must do the oral examination.
